day 1 & 2

Day 1
After the hellish 20 hour flight & madness of quick connections in Sydney & LA (not to mention the crazy security/customs at LAX) we finally arrived in NYC. We were exhausted, freezing cold & 1 suitcase down (mine) but we had made it & the excitement of seeing Gotham for the first time ensured our spirits were high.
We dropped what we had off at the hotel & I put on every piece of clothing I had with me & went to dinner with the Austrade delegate Cheng Teoh, young designer Anna Williamson, E-Type Jazz group & the deputy premiere Kevin Foley amongst others & grabbed a meal at an irish pub.
Our first experience of American meal sizes- they aren't messing around here an entree is bigger than our main & everything comes with a kilo of potato on the side in various forms- mashed, fried, baked, chopped- no wonder the lo-carb diet was such a success over here!
Everyone was fantastic & we had a great time, but after a few wines delerium set in, so armed with a jacket the lovely Cheng had lent me we headed off for our room.

Day 2
Next morning we awoke early & headed out for a bite to eat. Nic was feeling really jet lagged but I was surprisingly well- despite being bra-less (I left it on the plane somehow??) & in the same clothing I had been in for 48 hours ( I did have fresh undies & sox so thankfully I wasn't too nasty). We grabbed breaky & coffee at a classsic NYC diner- the menu said 2 eggs & an english muffin but classically when our meals arrived there- as seems to be standard was the kilo of chopped & fried potato! We both scraped it to the side & drank a cappuccino developing a strategy for the day.
Department Stores & shopping:
We decided on checking out the department stores to try & pick up some essentials we were lacking. Everything is in walking distance & easy to locate so we checked out Saks 5th ave- a classic sparsely stocked expensive department store with Prada, Marni & other upscale brands, Bergdorf Goodman- a far more blingy over the top expensive store full of gold jewellery & women in furs, Barneys- where I found some crazy cheap designer boots & Marc by Marc Jacobs clothing which is sooooo cheap over here???- this place had all the expensive designer pretention but also had younger funkier floors which felt less intimidating, finally we did a quick visit to Bloomingdales where Nic found some nice menswear- this store was alot more like a DJs or Myers & had a really relaxed feel.
The sales in US seem to be commission based so service in some stores is superb.
We ventured into DKNY & the service was second to none. The male sales assistant got us waters & coffees & nothing was too much trouble! On the other hand Banana Republic had 10 girls standing around on their own mobile phones or ipods not serving while people queued for 20 mins (bizarre!). We noticed many of the retail staff were males in both kinds of stores & they all have a security person greeting you at the door.

Nic found a little burger place for lunch called Pop Burger where they serve you 2 mini burgers instead of 1- it was soooo cute - see pix attached.

After a long day I was beginning to feel quite upset about my missing case but fortunately we managed to get through to the airport & have it located & sent to our hotel.
Exhausted & jet lagged we crashed out & slept solidly.
